Day 1 London Heathrow to Beijing
Fly with British Airways from London Heathrow to Beijing. Alternatively, we can arrange departures from your local airport.
Day 2 Arrive Beijing (D)
Upon arrival, you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel for a 3 night stay. In the afternoon you will have time to relax or take a walk in the surrounding area. Your guide will be pleased to advise on what you can do at your leisure. In the early evening your guide will escort you for dinner where you will meet your fellow group members.
Day 3 Beijing city tour (BLD)
In the morning you will visit the Temple of Heaven – this was the place where the Ming and Qing emperors worshipped the god of heaven and prayed for good harvest for the year, where you can observe the tradition of practicing Tai Chi in the courtyard. This will be followed by a stroll through Tiananmen Square, one of the largest city squares in the world. Finally, there will be a visit to the Forbidden City which served as the grand imperial palace for centuries.
Day 4 The Great Wall (BLD)
Today will begin with a visit the Great Wall at Mutianyu, a post along the wall which offers all round stunning views and a less crowded atmosphere. Mutianyu was built in the mid-6th century and its rich history can be observed in its unique construction. In the evening there will be a sumptuous Peking Duck Dinner, a traditional delicacy in Beijing.
Day 5 Beijing city tour and to Xian (BLD)
After breakfast, there will be a visit to the Summer Palace, which includes a grand collection of lakes, gardens and palaces where you can expect lovely views and walks. Afterwards, you will have a chance to enjoy a relaxing boat ride on the beautiful Kunming Lake. This will be followed by a stop at the Birds Nest Stadium and Water Cube, which hosted the memorable 2008 Olympics. Following an opportunity for photographs, the final stop of the day will be at the Hutongs. Here, you can expect a more personal insight into the everyday life of traditional Beijing citizens. Finally, you will catch a flight to Xian.
Day 6 Terracotta Warriors (BLD)
Today your guide will take you to visit the Terracotta Warriors, a stunning collection of ten thousand life size statues of the Chinese army made over two thousand years ago, yet preserved almost perfectly. This will be followed by a visit to the ancient city wall in Xian in the afternoon, which can be enjoyed through a peaceful stroll or a bike ride. It is the most complete city wall that has survived in China, it is one of the largest military defensive systems in the world. This evening you will try a dumpling dinner while enjoying the Tang Dynasty Show, a colourful performance of traditional music and dance.
Day 7 Xian city tour and Bullet train to Luoyang (BLD)
Today, you will visit to the Shaanxi museum which houses over a quarter of a million artefacts on display, including treasures from many periods of China’s history. The next stop, the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, will explore China’s unique architecture style. Visit the Muslim Quarter to see local life in the community. Finally, you will be transferred to the train station for your bullet train to Luoyang.
Day 8 Shaolin Temple (BLD)
Today will start with a short journey to visit the UNESCO protected Longmen Grottoes, one of the three finest existing examples of Chinese Buddhist art. You will also visit the Shaolin Temple located in the Songshan Mountain where you can enjoy an impressive Kung Fu Performance. There will be an overnight stay in Dengfeng County.
Day 9 Train to Taiyuan (BLD)
This morning will include a three hour bullet train from Zhengzhou to Taiyuan. Your guide will meet you and transfer you to Pingyao.
Day 10 Explore Pingyao (BLD)
Pingyao is a listed World Heritage Site, offering great insight into the architectural styles of Imperial China. Highlights include the Ancient City Wall and Ancient Ming and Qing Street. Further examples include the Rishengchang Financial House Museum, Zhengguo Temple and Shuang Lin Temple.
Day 11 Train to Datong (BLD)
Today, our guide will transfer you to the train station for the train to Datong. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to the hotel.
Day 12 Yungang Caves and Hanging Monastery (BLD)
Today, you will visit the UNESCO Listed Yungang Caves, ancient Buddhist temple grottoes, an excellent example of rock-cut architecture. Following this, there will be a visit the 1,500 year old Hanging Monastery, notable not only for its location on a sheer precipice but also because it is the only existing temple with the combination of three Chinese traditional religions: Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. After, you will board a flight to Shanghai.
Day 13 Zhujiajiao (BL)
Today is a day trip to Zhujiajiao, an ancient water town with a history of over 1,700 years known as the ‘Pearl Stream’. Locations include the Ming and Qing Dynasty bridges, ancient and historic buildings, and finally, the Ma Family Garden before heading back to Shanghai.
Day 14 Suzhou day trip (BLD)
Today will feature an excursion to the scenic city of Suzhou, known as the ‘Venice of the East’. Its attractive gardens are renowned for their remarkable history and skilled horticulturalists, an example being the Master of the Nets Garden. After, enjoy a cruise on the striking Grand Canal, visiting a local silk mill still in operation, but uses only traditional methods for silk production. Finally, there will be a chance to visit the Panmen Gate before returning to Shanghai.
Day 15 Shanghai city tour (BLD)
The first attraction of the day will be the Yu Yuan Gardens followed by the Jade Buddha Temple. The centuries old Yu Yuan Gardens is home to beautiful pavilions, corridors, streams, courtyards and flowers, perfect for the horticulturist. At the Jade Buddha Temple, one can expect impressive temples, both historical and modern, sporting large, intricate sculptures of Buddha. After viewing the Shanghai museum, there will be an opportunity to visit the waterfront attraction of the Bund to admire Shanghai as a modern metropolis. Later, on top of the Shanghai world financial centre, you can enjoy a breathtaking bird’s eye view of the whole city.
Day 16 Fly back to London (B)
Transfer to the airport for your flight back to London Heathrow.
