Discover some of China’s classic sights as well as some lesser known attractions. Travelling mostly by train, this tour uses China’s efficient and extensive rail network to explore different regions of the country. Explore some of China’s famous landmarks such as the Great Wall in Beijing, the Terracotta Warriors in Xian and the futuristic architecture of Shanghai. Cruise along the Li River from Guilin to Yangshuo admiring the stunning karst limestone peaks and beautiful scenery from the water. Visit the UNESCO listed ancient town of Pingyao, whose history dates back around 2,700 years and has perfectly preserved traditional streets and city walls. Also visit the classic scenery of Mount Huangshan, also known as Yellow Mountain and often the subject of classic Chinese art and literature. Its forested peaks breaking through the clouds are a sight not to be missed. Accommodation on this tour is at unique, boutique-style properties with charm and character.
Day 1 Arrive Beijing
Upon arrival, you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel for a 3 night stay.
Day 2 Beijing City tour (B)
In the morning you will visit the Temple of Heaven – this was the place where the Ming and Qing emperors worshipped the god of heaven and prayed for good harvests for the year, where you can observe the tradition of practicing Tai Chi in the courtyard. This will be followed by a stroll through Tiananmen Square, the biggest square in the world. Finally, there will be a visit to the Forbidden City which served as the grand imperial palace for centuries.
Day 3 Great Wall (B)
Today visit the Great Wall at Mutianyu, a post along the wall offering breathtaking views in a less crowded atmosphere.
Mutianyu was built in the mid-6th century and its rich history can be observed in its unique construction.
Day 4 Train to Pingyao (B)
In the morning visit the Summer Palace, which includes a grand collection of lakes, gardens, palaces and scenic views.
Afterwards, enjoy a relaxing boat ride on the beautiful Kunming Lake. This will be followed by an opportunity for photographs at the Birds Nest Stadium and Water Cube, which hosted the memorable 2008 Olympics and 2015 World Championships. Your final stop of the day will be at the Hutongs. Here, you can have a personal insight into the everyday life of traditional Beijing citizens. Finally, you will catch the train to Pingyao.
Day 5 Pingyao (B)
Enjoy a full day exploring Pingyao ancient town. Pingyao is a listed World Heritage Site offering great insight into the architectural styles of Imperial China. Its perfectly preserved and atmospheric streets offer an insight into a bygone era. Highlights include the Ancient City Wall and Ancient Ming and Qing Street. Further examples include the Rishengchang Financial House Museum, Zhengguo Temple and Shuang Lin Temple.
Day 6 Train to Xian (B)
Today you will take a journey on one of China’s efficient and high-tech high speed bullet trains. (Journey time approx 3 hours). Upon arrival you will be met and transferred to your accommodation.
Day 7 Terracotta Warriors (B)
Today your guide will take you to visit the Terracotta Warriors, a stunning collection of ten thousand life size statues of the Chinese army made over two thousand years ago, yet preserved almost perfectly. This will be followed by a visit to the ancient city wall in Xian in the afternoon, which can be enjoyed through a peaceful stroll or a bike ride. It is the most complete city wall that has survived in China, it is one of the largest military defensive systems in the world.
Day 8 Fly to Guilin (B)
Today, you will visit to the Shaanxi Museum which houses over a quarter of a million artefacts on display, including treasures from many periods of China’s history. The next stop, the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, will explore China’s unique architecture style, with the day ending on a visit to the Muslim Quarter to see local life in the community. You will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Guilin, in Guanxi province, situated in southern China.
Day 9 Li River Cruise (BL)
Following breakfast, you will be transferred to Zhujiang quay for a four hour boat cruise on the breathtaking Li River towards Yangshuo. On the Li River, there are opportunities to enjoy the tranquil rural scenes of buffalo
farming the rice terraces, children playing in the river and the towering karst mountain peaks. Arrival will be at around 14:00 in Yangshou. This evening there is an optional spectacular ‘Impressions of Liu Sanjie’ show. Different from other shows that take place in an enclosed space, this one is actually staged in the Li River itself!
Day 10 Yangshuo, Guilin (B)
This morning is free for leisure and relaxation. Take the opportunity to explore this beautiful area independently, or perhaps join an optional cookery class or take a walk or cycle ride along the Yulong River to explore the countryside. In the afternoon return to Guilin and visit the Reed Flute Caves. In the evening, you will see the fascinating Cormorant Fishing Show.
Day 11 Fly to Huangshan (B)
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Huangshan, upon arrival, meet and transfer to Huangshan, take the cable car up to the top of the mountain. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Huangshan is a mountain range located in the eastern Chinese province of Anhui. It is famous for its towering granite peaks covered in vegetation, mostly Huangshan Pine trees. Its beautiful landscape is often the subject of Chinese paintings and poetry.
Day 12 Fly to Shanghai (B)
Enjoy the sunrise in the early morning and later explore the Mountain. Visit Brush Pen Peak, followed by Begin to Believe Peak. See the ancient twisted pine trees, Lion Peak and Xihai Grand Canyon. You will take the cable car down later in the afternoon and take an evening flight to Shanghai. Transfer to your hotel upon arrival.
Day 13 Shanghai City Tour (B)
The first attraction of the day will be the Yu Yuan Gardens followed by the Jade Buddha Temple. The centuries old Yu Yuan Gardens is home to beautiful pavilions, corridors, streams, courtyards and flowers, perfect for the horticulturist. At the Jade Buddha Temple, one can expect impressive temples, both historical and modern, sporting large, intricate sculptures of Buddha. After viewing the Shanghai Museum, there will be an opportunity to visit the waterfront attraction of the Bund to admire Shanghai as a modern metropolis. Later, on top of the Shanghai world financial centre, you can enjoy a breathtaking bird’s eye view of the whole city.
Day 14 Zhu Jia Jiao (B)
Today will start with a visit to Zhujiajiao, an ancient water town with a history of over 1,700 years known as the Pearl Stream. After, you can expect to see the Ming and Qing Dynasty bridges, two ancient and historic buildings, and the Ma Family Garden before heading back to Shanghai for an afternoon at leisure.
Day 15 Depart Shanghai (B)
Transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
